When is the best time to get married?

We’re pretty sure you know the answer to this already, but it’s worth us creating this post as we still get asked this - we imagine more from a filming perspective - than an actual wedding planning one. In short, there is no right or wrong time to get married, it’s all down to the couple’s preference and what works best for them.

We have however provided some references below to different films we’ve created over the seasons and our take - but we’re pretty sure you already have a time of year in mind if you’re reading this!

Spring

The second most popular time of year to get married as we run technically from end of March to end of June.

Flowers are blooming, we have longer days and the weather (hopefully!) is getting more consistent and warmer. It’s no surprise couples choose this season to host their special day. From a filming perspective, it’s probably the best time of year as we don’t yet have the sun at full heat creating lots of shadows or glare, but we have plenty of natural light to work with. Also, guests don’t tend to look quite as cold as they can do at other times of the year!

From a planning perspective, this is one of our busiest times so we’d ideally need at least 3 months notice to check we can book you in otherwise our core days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday) tend to already be taken by couples booking a year+ in advance.

Summer

It’s warm, sunny, and everyone is in a great mood - probably just a couple of reasons why this is the most popular time to get married in the UK and why we’re often booked up July, August and September. With addition to school holidays, more people tend to be able to take time off which can be beneficial when you’re planning your wedding guest list.

As for spring, this is a great time to film as we can usually spend more time outside to bask in the natural light. Guests also tend to be a bit more relaxed, catching up and having a couple of drinks outside - so we can capture more natural happy faces and joy on camera.

Autumn

Traditionally weddings were always held in the warmer months, however over the last few years this has changed significantly with more couples opting for Autumnal style weddings with bold colours such as reds, oranges and yellows. The contrast of a heritage or industrial style venue with autumn colours can be sublime and not only look incredible in photographs, but also fantastic in video.

So we know the colours and tones can look great, what about the light? Well depends how much into Autumn we’re talking, if it’s early October then we have more light still during the day to play with, you just have to chance the weather; as we move further on we have less natural light and will rely more on internal venue facilities. This doesn’t mean we can’t capture incredible footage - traditonal fires and lanterns can offer a warming and natural glow to content.

Winter

We certainly see a shift over winter to less frequent weddings, we take this mostly due to the temperatures and shorter days - however we are finding more couples are looking to celebrate their special day alongside the magic of Christmas or New Year festivities; or they’re looking at venues when they’re quieter in January and February to avoid the spring and summer rush.

There is much less natural light to work with at this time of year and the weather can be hit and miss, however we have previously captured beautiful weddings in snow or frosty scenery, as well as spending more time indoors at heritage venues with large fires and smart industrial lighting to add an extra seasonal touch.

Winter is less popular, however if this is a season that means something to you as a couple then you have the advantage of more venue capacity as well as booking videographers and likely photographers to.

In a nutshell

There’s really no ‘best’ time of year to get married from a preference perspective - it’s all down to the couple. From a videography view point, we would suggest spring due to optimum lighting and general weather, however this isn’t a given (particularly in the UK), so always be prepared the weather may not always behave when you want it to - as much as we’d like to as part of our service, we haven’t quite got weather control down just yet!
